Q. How much non-clinical opportunity is out there for physicians?
More than you can imagine. Our 40+ faculty members who are physicians working non-clinically will be providing inside information on dozens of non-clinical career paths. Your biggest challenge will likely be deciding which of many possible roads to follow.

Q. Will work from home positions be discussed?
A. Yes, many of the fields covered offer remote based opportunities. In fact, many of our faculty work remotely.

Q. Do attendees find jobs at the conference?
A. Yes! We will once again be inviting recruiters and employers to the conference. Our recruiters and employers traditionally conduct hundreds of interviews onsite and hire many of our physician attendees. Last year industries represented included pharma, consulting, insurance, education, independent review and others. Additionally, attendees find jobs through their networking at the conference.

Q. How does the free mentoring/networking work?
A. Attendees have the opportunity to sign up for 15 minute 1-1 mentoring sessions with our large and diverse panel of mentors. You will have numerous opportunities to network with faculty and fellow attendees during the conference.

Q. What is the age of your typical attendee and why do they come to the conference?
A. It runs the full range. Each year we have 375+ attendees and this will include interns, residents and physicians in their 70s. Our attendees come for many reasons including wanting to make more money, have more control over their schedule, looking for new challenges, a physical disability that prevents them from practicing medicine, or simply no longer enjoying the practice of medicine.

Q. Are there opportunities for physicians without Boards, Residency or even a US License?
Yes. Many of the fields discussed have positions that do not require current Boards and some of our faculty members do not have Boards.

Q. How many of the main conference attendees attend one or more of the preconferences?
A. Over 50%, as the information contained in the preconferences is not covered in the main conference.

David Best, MD, MBA

Dr. Best will recall his inspirational transition from an unhappy surgical resident to a self-fulfilled nonclinical physician who has had success in multiple fields including medical communicatons/advertising, phrama, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Best will provide insightful suggestions for how to find the non-clinical career that is right for you. He will provide his insights on why physicians leave the bedside, when you know that it is time to leave, how to break into non-clinical work and successfully transition, and how to succeed once you have made the transition. Born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, David went on to Franklin & Marshall College, Temple University School of Medicine for his MD, Lenox Hill Hospital for his surgical residency, Pitt for ENT, and Baruch College for his MBA. Prudence L. Gourguechon, MD

Dr. Gourguechon will offer practical suggestions to address some of the more common fears that physicians transitioning to a non-clinical career may face such as potentially disappointing parents and other family members, spousal buy in, loss of prestige/no longer being the focus of attention in your organization, doing things outside of your comfort zone, concern about wasting your training and clinical skills, apprehension about leaving a structured career path with great job security to one that is less certain, not knowing what exactly you will be doing professionally on a day to day basis next week or five years from now, and financial insecurity. Dr. Gourguechon will suggest specific strategies for managing the stress of a major career transition. She’ll also show the (sometimes hidden) positive side of the above situations a perspective that can greatly assist your successful transition and emotional wellbeing. Questions & Answers

Gourguechon, MD is a psychiatrist and Past President of the 3000+ member American Psychoanalytic Association and serves as advisor to business leaders, marketers, investors, entrepreneurs and political campaigns (see www.invantageadvising.com). Frequently quoted in the media as an expert on the psychological aspects of individual and group behavior as well as social, cultural and political phenomena, she has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New Yorker, Forbes, LA Times, and The Atlantic among many media outlets. She has recently been interviewed on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell and CNN’s Smerconish shows. She is a graduate of Yale College, a member of Yale’s first class of women. She received her medical degree from the University of Michigan and her training in psychiatry at Northwestern University medical school, with postgraduate training in psychoanalysis at the Institute for Psychoanalysis, Chicago. Dr. Gourguechon is a SEAK alumna.

A. Opportunities for Physicians in Pharma

Michael Trigg, MD

Dr. Trigg will provide a broad overview of the various roles physicians fill in pharmaceutical companies including drug safety, medical affairs, marketing, communication, and research. He will discuss typical day to day responsibilities, travel requirements, opportunities for advancement, compensation, and need for relocation (and potential work from home). Dr. Trigg will provide practical advice for physicians who wish to position themselves to break into industry and succeed once this transition has been made. Dr. Trigg will also address in a broad way the major differences from the usual physician practices looking after individual patients and the physician responsibility and reporting structures in the pharmaceutical industry. He will also discuss the major differences between major pharmaceutical copies that are considered “large companies” from those that are “mid-sized” versus those that are small “start-ups.” Questions & Answers

His roles include Oncology Scientific Advisor at Bristol-Myers Squibb and Executive Medical Director, Oncology for Merck. Dr. Trigg currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for Adaptive Page Therapeutics and President and Director of MET Development, LLC. Dr. Trigg is a pediatric oncologist who was a tenured professor at 3 different university academic medical centers over a 30+ year period of time and directed stem cell transplant programs and stem cell processing laboratories before joining industry.

Heidi George Moawad, MD

Dr. Moawad will survey the diverse full time, part time, and contract non-clinical teaching opportunities available to physicians including medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, PAs, other medical professionals, undergrads, invited presentations, and other opportunities. She frequently presents on the topic of Non-Clinical Careers. Dr. Moawad’s non-clinical experience includes medical writing, teaching appointments, pharmaceutical consulting, utilization review, and grant reviewing. She received her BA and MD degrees from Case Western Reserve and resides in Ohio.

Saif Rathore, MD, PhD, MPH

With healthcare representing 1/6 of the US economy, many large consulting companies employ and engage physicians. Dr. Rathore will survey the types of projects physicians at consulting firms can work on for clients such as pharmaceutical companies and healthcare systems. He will explain the characteristics which are a good fit for this work including problem solving skills, being a team player, being able to work in a dynamic setting, and willingness to think in an evolving fashion. Dr. Rathore will also discuss what a typical day could be like, travel requirements, compensation & benefits, working conditions, opportunities for advancement, and how physician consultants are called to tap into their clinical knowledge. rathore.jpgSaif S. Rathore, MD, PhD, MPH is Medical Director of Pharmaceutical and Medical Products with McKinsey & Company. His previous consulting experience includes being Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of the boutique healthcare consulting firm Medicus Economics where he utilized his expertise in the analysis of large data sets (e.g clinical trials, registries, EMR, claims, pricing data, etc.). Dr. Rathore trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, was previously on the faculty at Yale School of Medicine, and started his consulting career 20 years ago. He earned his MD and PhD from Yale, his MPH from UNC Chapel Hill, and his BA from Cornell. 

B. Opportunities for Physicians in the Disability Insurance Field

Andrea Savona Brown, MD

Dr. Brown will survey the full time, part time and contract opportunities available to physicians in the disability insurance field. She will describe what physicians do on a day to day basis including claim review, research, report writing, peer to peers, and interacting with claims professionals. Dr. Brown will explain why she loves her job and finds it intellectually stimulating and very enjoyable. Prior to transitioning, Dr. Brown served as a primary care physician in Kennebunk, Maine. Dr. Brown is Board Certified in Family Medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree at Colorado College and her Medical Degree at Dartmouth.

Olaf Hedrich, MD, FACC, FHRS

Dr. Hedrich will describe why medical device companies hire physicians and the great variety of tasks that these physicians may be called upon to perform including product development, medical oversight of clinical trials, monitoring product safety, risk assessments, interacting with regulators and payers, supporting sales and customers, engaging key opinion leaders, teaching, etc. He will provide his perspectives on potential “good fits” for physicians and surgeons looking to make a career change,hours/working conditions, travel requirements, maintaining a clinical practice, maintaining your medical skills, compensation considerations, benefits, remote work possibilities, license and board requirements, opportunities for advancement, and other practical issues. Dr. Hedrich will offer insight into what medical device companies are looking for in physician hires, and provide suggestions for how to approach such a career change in order to be set up for success. hedrich.jpgOlaf Hedrich, MD, FACC, FHRS is Vice President, Medical Safety and Senior Medical Director at Boston Scientific. He has had the opportunity to recruit, interview, and hire physicians and nurses from a diverse background. He started his career in industry in 2011 and his interests focus on sudden death, cardiac arrhythmia, and stroke prevention. Prior to transitioning, Dr. Hedrich was in private practice as a cardiac electrophysiologist. Dr. Hedrich received his MD from the University of the Witwatersrand, trained in internal medicine at St Louis University School of Medicine, and then went on to obtain fellowships in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Tufts. Dr. Hedrich is multilingual and has lived and practiced in Boston, Seattle, St. Louis, Johannesburg, South Africa and Nottingham, UK. 

B. Utilization Review Opportunities for Physicians with Independent Review Organizations (IROs) and Health Insurers

Sharon Kuhn, MD

Dr. Kuhn will describe the numerous full time and part time/contract opportunities open to physicians performing utilization reviews for IROs and health insurers. She will explain what physicians in this field do on a day to day basis, the different types of reviews (prospective, retrospective, appeals, etc) and the numerous advantages to this work including the opportunity to work from home in many cases, manageable hours/schedule, and intellectually stimulating work that vastly increases your medical knowledge. Prentiss Taylor, Jr., MD, FACP

Dr. Taylor will explain the exciting and growing number of opportunities to practice telemedicine. He will discuss how you are paid (per diem v. salary) and how much you are paid, charting, and malpractice/liability. He will also explain scheduling shifts, the substantial advantages to this type of work, the types of cases you can and can not see, the specialties which can do this work (you might be surprised at this), regulatory considerations and the future of this exciting field. taylor.jpgPrentiss Taylor, Jr., MD, FACP is an experienced telemedicine clinician who has broad knowledge of opportunities in this area - having organized regional telemedicine conferences featuring the major players in this field. Dr. Taylor is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and General Preventive Medicine. He earned his AB from Harvard and his MD from Harvard Medical School. In addition to his telemedicine and other clinical work, Dr. Taylor has vast non-clinical medical director experience in the health insurance, disability insurance and ACO fields. Dr. Taylor is a highly experienced public speaker.  

B. Opportunities as a Medical Science Liaison

Linda Ho, MD

Dr. Ho will recount her inspirational story of perseverance and overcoming adversity to break into pharma. She will then describe the opportunities for physicians as a medical science liaison – a role that requires a high level of scientific acumen but board-certification or licensure may not be required. Dr. Ho will describe what these field-based professionals do on a day to day basis, including meeting with key opinion leaders, delivering and gathering insights, supporting research, and cultivating relationships. She will provide additional details on being an MSL including compensation, territory sizes, travel requirements, and adjusting to the corporate environment. Most importantly, Dr. Ho will provide practical advice for positioning yourself for finding and landing your first MSL position. Questions and Answers  

ho.jpgLinda Ho, MD is a medical science liaison, hematology oncology, for AbbVie where she serves as Team Lead for Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Previously she served as an MSL with Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals and Bayer. She is a seasoned healthcare professional with diverse experience that includes industry experience, direct patient care, and pathology. Dr. Ho’s background includes developing innovative educational programs on emerging trends in healthcare to promote awareness of medical conditions and treatment options. A native Chicagoan, Dr. Ho earned her BA from Case Western Reserve University and her MD from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. She trained in pathology at Northwestern and Case Western Reserve University.

Ruben J. Rucoba, MD

Dr. Rucoba will survey the broad opportunities for physicians as a work from home freelance medical writer. He will describe the diverse projects physicians may be called upon to assist with including consumer materials/information, web sites, test questions, CME content, slide decks, regulatory materials, news articles, editing journal articles, etc. Dr. Rucoba will explain that freelance writing can be started while you are still in practice and that the work is lucrative enough to constitute a full time non-clinical career. He will explain why boards and a medical license are typically not necessary and give tips on how to break into this field and succeed. Dr. Rucoba will also discuss overhead, liability, insurance and start-up costs, and opportunities for physicians as a full time employed medical writer.Questions and Answers

In addition to his writing and editing, Dr. Rucoba maintains a clinical practice in pediatrics and is on the faculty of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Rucoba has appeared as a media spokesman on multiple television stations. He received his BA from Loyola University Chicago and his MD from University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Marijo Snyder, MD

Dr. Snyder will survey the wide variety of roles physicians serve in healthcare administration throughout the US including medical staff officer, VPMA, CMO, CEO, practice management and quality/safety. She will discuss what may be required on a day to day basis, working conditions, hours, compensation (could very well be a pay raise from clinical medicine depending on your specialty), the practicality of maintaining a clinical practice, and opportunities for advancement. Dr. Snyder will provide her advice as to additional education that may be helpful or necessary, and most importantly, she will explain how to demonstrate leadership and break into administration. snyder.jpgMarijo Snyder, MD is Vice President, Medical Staff Development and Clinical Engagement for Bronson Healthcare Group – a health system with 8,800 employee which serves patients and families throughout southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. Dr. Snyder’s previous administrative roles include Vice-President, System Quality and Medical Staff Development and Medical Director, Physician Development. She is also the Board Chair for CentraCare, a PACE organization serving frail elderly adults and serves on the board of the West Michigan Cancer Center. Before transitioning to her Leadership roles Dr. Snyder practiced OB/GYN. She is a graduate of Calvin College (BS) and Wayne State University School of Medicine (MD).

Dr. Leone will survey the most common practice areas that many physicians gravitate to including personal injury, medical malpractice, intellectual property, and health law. leone.jpgArmand Leone, Jr., MD, JD, MBA is a highly successful physician attorney who specializes in medical malpractice, consumer safety, and the ethical development of healthcare innovations to improve the lives of individuals with needs. Dr. Leone is admitted to practice medicine and law in New Jersey and New York. He is a Fellow of the College of Legal Medicine and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia, New York Medical College and Columbia University Law School. He graduated from each of these institutions with honors. Dr. Leone was a member of the 1980 Olympic equestrian show jumping team, and remains active in amateur sports as the Chairman of the Board of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation. Prior to transitioning to law, Dr. Leone practiced radiology. 

B. Non-Clinical Opportunities in the Life Insurance Industry

Judy L. Finney, MD, FACC

Dr. Finney will describe the work available for physicians with the 100s of US Life Insurance Companies. She will explain the work physicians typically do in a life insurance company, hours, work environment, the compensation range that can be expected for new hires, the typical corporate compensation and benefit structure, what the work consists of on a day-to-day basis, and the specialties and clinical experience which are most appropriate for this endeavor. In addition, Dr. Finney will explain the benefits and potential drawbacks of working in a corporate environment and, in particular, at life insurance companies. She will provide practical tips for positioning yourself for such work and landing a first time position in the life insurance industry. Questions and Answers 

finney.jpgJudy L. Finney, MD, FACC has been an Associate Medical Director with Allstate Financial in Chicago since 2012 where her responsibilities mainly involve underwriting. Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Finney received her MD from Michigan State, where she graduated in the top 5% of her class. Dr. Finney is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology. Prior to joining Allstate, Dr. Finney practiced Medicine for more than 25 years in Arizona. She enjoys mentoring former colleagues regarding career transition.

David J. Lucier, MD, MBA, MPH, CPPS

Dr. Lucier will survey the opportunities for physicians in the fields of patient safety and quality. He will explain what physicians in these fields do on a day to day basis including reviewing adverse events, process improvement, patient advocacy, quality improvement, professional complaints, and perhaps most importantly, developing people. Dr. Lucier will cover compensation, working conditions, the ability to maintain a clinical practice and other practical considerations. lucier.jpgDavid J. Lucier, MD, MBA, MPH, CPPS is the Director of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety for Hospital Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Lucier earned his BA in Economics at Wesleyan University (where he was a varsity football player), his MD/MBA from Tufts, and his MPH from Harvard. He completed Internal Medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard affiliated teaching hospital in Boston. In addition, Dr. Lucier completed the Harvard Fellowship in Patient Safety and Quality. Dr. Lucier is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. His current interests in quality improvement and patient safety revolve around transitions of care, readmission prevention, care coordination, pending results at discharge management, provider to provider hand-offs, standardizing non-clinical processes of care, and physician burnout.

Ryan Bayley, MD

Dr. Bayley will describe the exciting and extremely rewarding opportunities for physicians available in the field of coaching. Dr. Bayley will discuss how to get into this work including certification and getting your first few clients. Kirti Patel, MD

Dr. Patel will explain how working with startups can allow you to make a bigger impact and effect positive change, all while personally enriching yourself. patel.jpgKirti Patel, MD has worked with a number of startups in different roles: as medical advisor to Confi (women’s health education), as consultant for Commense (a PureTech Health company developing microbiome therapies for early childhood), and as a clinical researcher for Renovia (med device company developing therapies for pelvic floor health). She is currently an advisor/angel to Nutrimedy, a telenutrition platform connecting patients to registered dietitians. Dr. Patel is part of the Golden Seeds angel network, Capital W, & the Chloe Capital Accelerator, all of which aim to increase venture funding for women founders. Dr. Patel is an OB/GYN who still practices part time through locum tenens.

Charmian Lewis, MD

Dr. Lewis will provide insights into the many non-clinical opportunities available to physicians in HIT including with EHR vendors, providers, the government, and those dealing with data analytics. Dana C. Carpenter, MD

Dr. Carpenter will survey the vast landscape of medical communication and healthcare advertising and describe ways that physicians can apply their clinical expertise in this fast paced industry, e.g. craft scientific stories for healthcare providers delivered via innovative mediums, create patient-facing content distributed through novel channels, develop medical education programs, lead publication-planning, and more. She will discuss practical matters such as qualifications (Boards and License generally not required), agency locations, a “day-in-the-life”, remote work opportunities, typical client base, career advancement, travel and lifestyle expectations. Most importantly, Dr. Carpenter will describe attributes that medical communication and advertising agencies are seeking in physician employees and will provide practical advice to help attendees break into this dynamic field and achieve success. Carpenter, MD is currently a Senior Vice President, Medical Director and a key member of the leadership team for the Medical and Scientific Affairs division of CDM New York, a leading healthcare advertising and medical communications agency where she develops medical and scientific content and provides important strategic direction to numerous Pharma brands. As an OBGYN, Dr. Carpenter lends her clinical experience and expertise to many women’s health brands, however, her marketing experience spans a number of therapeutic areas. Prior to her transition from medicine to marketing in 2009, Dr. Carpenter was the lead physician in a thriving OB/GYN practice for nearly 10 years. Dr. Carpenter, a native Chicagoan, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Medical Doctorate from Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.  

B. Opportunities for Physicians as a Physician Advisor

Sharmeela Kuperan, MD

All hospitals who accept Medicare are required to have a physician advisor. Dr. Kuperan will explain what physician advisors do on a day to day basis and why she enjoys the problem solving, interaction with colleagues, and clinical coordination. She will explain the different ways physicians can serve as physician advisors including on site, home based remote, full time, part time, directly hired by hospital or hired by a third party vendor. She will discuss hours, compensation, opportunities for advancement, the option of working clinically as well, and how to break into this field. Questions & Answers

Prior to transitioning she practiced neurology and sleep medicine in private practice. Robert J. Cooper, MD, FACE, FACP

Dr. Cooper will explain how to supplement your clinical income through consulting with knowledge companies. He will explain how this work can be quite lucrative (three to four figures per hour), can be done at a high volume, and how this work will often improve your clinical knowledge and skills. Dr. Cooper will describe the various forms of assignments that can be obtained including surveys, phone interviews and focus groups. He will discuss how to get the work, turnaround times, compliance issues and will provide practical tips to start, build, and run a lucrative knowledge consulting practice. Dr. Cooper will also provide a list of knowledge companies which utilize physicians. Questions and Answers

He is Boarded in both endocrinology and internal medicine, is clinically active and is a graduate of SUNY StonyBrook and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Cooper is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University and the University of Connecticut. He is a SEAK alumnus.

Heidi Bell, MD

Dr. Bell will describe the day to day work physicians typically do supporting clinical trials including, protocol writing, data integrity, opining on exclusion criteria, and dealing with adverse event reports. She will provide information on the different roles that are available to physicians and the different types of organizations that will hire physicians for these roles. Dr. Bell will give a frank assessment of the benefits and potential drawbacks of these positions including hours, working conditions, stress, compensation/benefits, the ability to potentially work remotely, and job security. She will provide tips to position yourself for and break into the fields of drug safety, research and medical monitoring. Questions & Answers

Dr. Loo’s business focuses on the acquisition, renovation, and rental of condominium units for up and coming professional students. In addition to his turnkey real estate investment business, Dr. Loo’s other non-clinical activities include EMR/EHR consulting, medical insurance review, and telemedicine. Dr. Loo earned his BS Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M University, and his MDPhD from the medical scientist training program through the joint Baylor College of Medicine/ Rice University Biomedical Engineering Department. Damon Green, MD, MS

Dr. Green will describe the wide ranging roles physicians fill as Medical Officers with the Food and Drug Administration which employ physicians of all specialties. In addition, Dr. Green will survey the opportunities for non-clinical employment beyond FDA including CDC, CMS, USPHS, NIH, and many others. Dr. Green will describe what physicians in the federal government may do on a day to day basis, qualifications needed, working conditions including work from home availability, compensation, benefits, where these jobs may be located and opportunities for advancement or moving to the private sector. Dr. Green will provide practical advice for locating and acquiring non-clinical employment with the federal government. Questions & Answers  

green.jpgDamon Green, MD, MS has served in multiple roles at the FDA including pharmacovigilance, professional affairs/stakeholder engagement, and Office of Compliance/Office of Scientific Investigations. Dr. Green’s clinical background is in Anesthesiology. He started his medical career as a home health aide, medical assistant, and later a Physician Assistant as he worked his way through school. Dr. Green received his BS from Howard University and his MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed residencies in Anesthesiology at Georgetown University Hospital, and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Green completed a Fellowship in Clinical Safety and Pharmacovigilance at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development and Commercialization.
